Understanding Dandruff

October 4th, 2009

Dandruff is a condition of the scalp that leads to itching and flaking of the scalp. Dandruff is a result of dead skin cells on the scalp shedding. Although dandruff is not a serious condition it can be very uncomfortable and sometimes difficult to treat.

There are several different causes of dandruff ranging from styling products to exposure in extreme heat and or extreme cold conditions. When treating your dandruff it is important to try to determine the correct root cause of the condition in order to help avoid similar circumstances in the future.

To treat dandruff you may wish to try using a different shampoo and or conditioner. There are many products on the market today that are formulated specifically for dandruff.

Home remedies are also common for treating dandruff. Some of these include adding a standard Bayer aspirin to your bottle of shampoo. Other home remedies include dabbing your scalp with a mixture of diluted (with water) apple cider vinegar and leaving overnight.

Oils such as olive oil, tea tree oil and coconut oils can also relieve symptoms of dandruff. Simply add a small dime sized amount of one of these oils to shampoo prior to massaging into your hair. Massage the scalp as you wash. Be sure to rinse well to remove all the excess oil from hair follicles.

If severe or persistent dandruff continues you should seek medical attention. Dandruff that appears not to be responding to over the counter or home remedy methods may indicate another health condition in which you may need to seek medical advise.
